What's This? Peace at Houghton?

Welcome to Candles and Lemons, a pro-peace blog offered to progressives, Democrats, Greens, socialists of various stripes, and anyone else interested in participating in a dialogue aimed at promoting social consciousness and pro-peace actions (individual, collective, and institutional) at Houghton College. I decided to open this space for conversation, brain-storming, and mutual encouragement as a result of the March 19, 2008, Houghton College faculty meeting. At that meeting, the faculty voted to approve the creation of a minor in 'military leadership' for Houghton students who participate in ROTC. The so-called minor (a collection of laundered credits garnered elsewhere under the tutelage of non-Houghton faculty) will appear on their Houghton College transcripts, just as if they had committed that work at Houghton. (Can you tell what I think of the decision yet? Keep reading!) Worse, the so-called minor will appear in the Houghton College catalog, which will mean that the College defacto promotes it.

The proposal passed by a vote of 39 to 19. This blog is offered as a place for those who opposed it, and their freiends who were absent from the meeting, to put our virtual heads together to find practical, concrete ways to represent the case for peace, for nonviolence, for anti-militarism. So as you have time or inclination, let's use this space to share ideas, raise questions, propose actions, post poems, and generally encourage one another.

Why the title? Check the next post! Peace, now!
